Vanessa Vandervort is a socialite who moonlights as a professional cat burglar to stayed one step ahead of the law stealing museum artifacts from around the world and valuable jewelry and art from greedy millionaires then sell them to the black market to establish and maintain a life of luxury and privilege. On routine job in the back lot of a Cairo museum, she stumbled on the a crate which was shipped from an ancient Egyptian tomb, where she found a valuable jewel which legend said anyone to possess the jewel obtains the power of invisibility. Overwhelmed with temptation, Vanessa grab the jewel with soon possessed incredible powers. Impressed with the powers of the jewel, she later obtained it as it were her own and assumed the identity of Vanish.

Vanish first encountered Black Shadow while attempting to steal a priceless artifact at a Lower Manhattan museum. At first they engaged in a physical scuffle, using her powers against Shadow, but when swoon by his rugged features, she immediately fell in love with him and soon, although still adversaries, involved in several cat-and-mouse chases where Vanish "playfully" tries to outwit Shadow, while luring him into sexual-themed mind games. This self-serving feud was later compromised when Vanish gets into a romantic relationship with Jonathon Reed (Black Shadow's secret identity) who already knows about Vanish's burglary exploits, but never had evidence proving her involvement. Reed play possum and takes advantage of this “romance” to expose Vanish to her never-ending heist sprees, if he only survives the psychical battles and mind games he faces with her as Black Shadow.

Vanish is a seasoned cat burglar with vast expertise in analyzing the latest security systems and plotting the best escape routes. She is near-perfectly fine-tuned in physical prowess and is a Olympic-level athlete, gymnast and swimmer. While wearing her jewel embodied in her leotard, Vanish possesses several invisibility-based powers and abilities (her favorite move is spinning in fast speeds to turn invisible and back) and Force Field Projection grants including the ability to generate protective invisible shields, ability to generate invisible power blasts, ability to control and manipulate objects, and the ability to generate powerful energy weapons. Other powers include enhanced speed, agility and reflexes, limited levitation and self-healing capabilities. She can generate tools and weapons like razor-sharp scalpel-like knives that can cut even though bullet-resistant glass, and invisible parachute-like "wings" to glide in air currents and from jumping from high skyscrapers. She is an expert in karate and Thai kickboxing. She is also well trained in advanced defensive driving skills. She drives in a 2009 Ferrari California which is modified with smokescreens, oil slick dispensers and miniature steel spike spheres, all used for defense against pursuing automobiles, especially NYPD patrol cruisers and Black Shadow's land vehicles.
